Antibiotics are essential for maintaining the health of both people and animals. However, the overuse of antibiotics in meat production is leading to the spread of antibiotic-resistant germs. These resistant germs increase the risk of illness, hospitalization, and even death. In the United States, over 2.8 million people are infected by antibiotic-resistant germs annually, resulting in more than 35,000 deaths. The situation is worsening, but it can be controlled.
By setting national targets to reduce antibiotic use in large feeding operations and only using antibiotics when animals are genuinely sick, we can slow or stop the spread of resistant germs.
